Hypersomnia is a chronic pathological state caused by an alteration of the normal sleep-wake cycle. It is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness that prevents you from staying awake for a long time and a tendency to sleep for unusually long periods. It occurs between the ages of 15 and 30 and is generally associated with severe fatigue, reduced cognitive and motor performance, and lack of mental clarity. According to the classification adopted by the American ASDC (Classification Committee., 1979) hypersomnia are divided into:

  • psychophysiological hypersomnia
  • hypersomnia associated with psychiatric disorders
  • hypersomnia associated with drug use
  • hypersomnia associated with sleep-induced breathing impairment
  • hypersomnia associated with nocturnal myoclonus and restless legs syndrome
  • narcolepsy
  • idiopathic hypersomnia
  • hypersomnia associated with diseases, intoxications and unfavorable environmental conditions
  • periodic hypersomnia
  • insufficient sleep hypersomnia
  • intoxicated with sleep
  • pseudohypersomnia: the long dormitories
  • subjective hypersomnia and without corresponding polysomnographic findings.
