In medicine, dementia is a neurological condition characterized by a decline in multiple cognitive functions, memory (short and long term) and at least one of abstract thinking, critical ability, language, space-time orientation, of such a degree as to make the patient not autonomous in daily activities, with preservation of the state of alert consciousness.
