Hypoxemia is the decrease in the amount of oxygen in arterial blood which causes cyanosis, tachycardia, dyspnoea, disturbances in attention, mood, insomnia and motor coordination, increased pulmonary pressure. The main causes of hypoxemia are alveolar hypoventilation, limited diffusion of alveolar oxygen, arteriovenous shunt and imbalances in ventilation-perfusion relationships.
