Cheyne-Stocks’ breathing is a pathological form of breathing characterized by the cyclical alternation of periods of apnea, interruption of breathing, and hyperpnea, that is, an increase in the volume of air introduced into the lungs with each breath. At regular intervals, which can vary from 45 seconds to about 3 minutes, breathing first becomes deeper and deeper and then progressively decreases until it disappears. Apnea is, in this case, of the central type and therefore does not depend on the obstruction of the respiratory tract but on the lack of nerve impulse from the bulbar respiratory center. The main causes are neurological, pharmacological, in case of high altitude and occurs in association with cardiac dysfunctions.
